18 Goals — With Love From Kazakhstan

zholbarys vs wendigos

Day 3 of the 2014 MegaIce Hockey 5’s also featured a friendly battle between the Kazakhstan Zholbarys and the Wendigos.  Both teams have already shown their skill-level in day 2, and it was quite clear that these two teams would be at the top and bottom of the International B Division.

Wendigos added former coach of the Macau men’s ice hockey team Yan Dong, and current member of the Hong Kong men’s ice hockey team Jasper Tang.

As soon as the puck dropped, it was show-time — Kazakh style.

The Zholbarys wasted no time to entertain the fans in the arena with their super stick-handling skills, agile moves, and perfectly-timed set plays.  They managed to score 18 goals during the short 36-minute game (running clock).

“I was exhausted but I had a lot of fun,” said Wendigos goaltender Scott Yang, who allowed all 18 goals in 45 shots.  “It would have been disrespectful to the fans if they just score a few goals and pass the puck around.”

The Kazakhstan players did ease their attacks a bit once the score went into double digits, but every single player from both teams worked very hard until the end of the game.

In late second period, the score was already past double digits by late second period.  Wendigos defender Yoann Riou blocked a shot with his gloves and cracked his thumb nail.  He got his thumb taped up at the first aid station and returned to the game in the third period.

Wendigos forward Jasper Tang then rocked the rink when he took a pass from Yan Dong and put the puck pass Zholbarys goalie Sergey Ossintsev.  The crowd went wild and cheered for the team who refused to give up.

“It was great mutual respect between the two teams,” said Wendigos defenseman Wong Cheung.  “Everyone of our players were happy, they worked hard, they had a lot of fun, and they gained a lot of experience.”

The Kazakhstan Zholbarys won the game by scoring 18 goals, the Wendigos took the experience and returned one big goal and one big heart.
