Wendigos Crowned Asian C Champions

hockey5 win

The Asian C divisional finals between the Wendigos and Sammi Superstars kick-started the “Night of Finals” of the 2013 MegaIce Hockey’5 tournament.  The rink was packed and surrounded by fans who were eager to catch some good hockey action.

Both teams were quite even in strength although Wendigos had the advantage of having more shots on goal.  The defense of Sammi Superstars was rock solid as Wendigo’s two Kazakh forwards were tightly guarded through out the game.  Local players Leo Ho, Stephen Leung, and Kazakh player Sultan Meirmanov also defended the Wendigos well.

However, it was the goalies from both team who stole the show.  Sammi Superstars goalie Wesley “Muscle” Yau was brilliant in net all game long.  He successfully held both Wendigo Kazakh forwards scoreless.  Wendigos goalie Scott Yang was also solid as the game was scoreless in regulation time.  Play was even for both teams, there were excellent scoring chances on both sides, and there were no clear winners at that point.

The see-saw battle continued in the overtime period as the goalies continue to shine until the Kazakhs finally took control of the game.  Defenseman Sultan Meirmanov took the puck from his own end and made a give and go play with center Inar Uteyev and scored the golden winning goal.  The Wendigos won the game 1-0 in overtime and became champions for the Asian C Division.

In other news, HKAIH beat Homely Sports 4-2 in the Asian B finals, Abu Dhabi Storms clobbered WIHO Saints 7-2 in the Women’s finals, and HK Hitmen beat Gold Club 4-3 in the Asian A finals.
