Late come-back not enough for Wendigos

Early games are not good.

The third day of the tournament started with a game between the Wendigos and HKAIH.  This was the second game for both teams as HKAIH lost to HK Hitmen 3-1 yesterday, and Wendigos beat Manila Hawks 4-3.  This is a must-win game for both teams in order to have a chance to qualify for a berth in the Asian B Division semi-finals.

A fantastic goal by Wendigo forward Inar Uteyev in the first period gave his team high hopes early in the game.  However, HKAIH players Chen Zhi Peng, a current player for the Chinese national team, and Daniel Wong led their team to leading Wendigos by the end of the first period.

HKAIH’s Strong play plus inexperience mistakes made by the less-experienced players of Wendigos yielded a 5-2 score line with just 4 minutes left in the game.  Wendigos forwards gave a final push to tie the game scoring two goals within 2 minutes, but it was a little too late as HKAIH won the game by a final score of 5-4.

The Wendigos Kazakh line is now famous around the tournament.  An unnamed fan said, “I heard there are three very good players from Kazakhstan, I woke up early to come see them play.  Wow, they’re good!”  The Kazakh trio scored a combined 5 points in today’s game with Inar Uteyev putting in 2 goals and Anvar Stamkulov netting 1 assist.  Defenseman Sultan Meirmanov had a great game scoring 1 goal and 1 assist.  Local Wendigo player Kevin Lo also scored his first goal in the tournament.

Wendigos will play Pool A favorites HK Hitmen tomorrow night at 7:30 pm.  A win or a tie will guarantee a berth in the Asian B semi-finals.
